Bloggy Blanket

This is just an idea and it may or may not work. We'll just have to see.

Me

1. Crochet a granny square with 5 rounds using DK and a 4mm crochet hook.
2. Send it off to another blogger.
3. Write posts about it on my blog, including the link to the next blog.

The recipient blogger

1. Crochets a granny square with 5 rounds using DK and a 4mm crochet hook.
2. Attaches it to the other square.
3. Writes a post about it on their blog and asks for someone to continue the blanket.
4. Sends it off to another blogger volunteer.
5. Write a comment on my blog (adding the next Bloggy Blanket volunteer) and I will add their link to a Bloggy Blanket Page.

Repeat the process until the blanket has 120 squares (10 x12).

Then

1. The next blogger does one round of edging.
2. Sends it off to another blogger.
3. Writes posts about it on their blog, linking to the next blog.
4. Writes a comment on my blog and I will add their link to the Bloggy Blanket Page.
Until 5 rounds of edging have been done.

Then

1. The final blogger does a final edge of his or her own choice.
2. They find a suitable person or cause and donate the blanket. There are many links on the web which list worthy causes.
3. They write posts about it on their blog.
4. They write a comment on my blog and I will add their link to a Bloggy Blanket Page with a congratulations for a completed Bloggy Blanket and undetailed details of the recipient or charity.

Now this can either end up like Chinese Whispers - as complete gobble de gook with lost parcels of crocheted squares or will end up as a blanket that is appreciated by a person in need. There would also be a list of links on the Bloggy Blanket Page showing each step of the work in progress.

Either way the thought is there and the task is not too onerous for like minded crochet people.

Now who wants to receive the first square? If more than one person says 'yes' then we could have more than one blanket. What do you think? We could do a knitted one for the knitters or fancy squares to show off our versatility. (There are plenty of 'Versatile' bloggers out there.)

Please be aware of the postage costs involved of sending a working granny blanket in progress around the world. This is the only drawback. I think we'd have to keep it in the UK only but there's nothing to stop other bloggers in other countries doing a Bloggy Blanket and linking back here.

Can it be done or not?

  1. I think it's a great idea, however, as you said in your post, you have to think of postage costs. It will be ok if you're adding a square at the start of the blanket, but I'd hate to think what the postage cost would be once there's 120 squares. Another idea could be that everyone crochets however many squares and sends them to one person who will do the joining together (I'm not volunteering by the way, lol). I love that second square you've done, very technical.

  2. It's a valid point. Let's see how the discussion goes.

  3. Hi Mum, I think it's a wonderful idea but I also agree with Jo, it could be very costly to keep posting it on - maybe a smaller 'lap blanket' size is worth considering. As a carer in a nursing home I know these are always needed and are very much appreciated, it would also make 4 people happy for the price of one! Sign me up for whatever you decide xx

    1. A blanket 8 squares by 8 squares weighs 435g. A parcel weighing 500g sent second class in the UK would cost £2.16 in postage which is reasonable.

  5. Hi there,
I would love to be involved by making square(s) but we are about to go travelling so do not know where we will be at any time (back in UK for a couple of weeks in August). I have pledged to knit some 'hats' for Innocent bottles as part of their Big Knit, so I have odd DK balls 'on board'. Will be making these whilst we are travelling then sending them off nearer the closing date. Also, if all the squares are sent to one place, they can start to be joined as soon as they arrive; you may be lucky enough to get a few people to volunteer to join smaller blankets so in the end more blankets can be made. What a fantastic idea! Good luck with volunteers. Alison x

  6. Thank you, Alison. There's no time limit for making these squares and we all would (at least I would) like to view each square so a blanket could take quite a long time. Say each person took a week, it would take 64 weeks for a smaller blanket. It really doesn't matter how long it takes as long as there is a blanket at the end of it. Let's see what others think.

  7. Great idea but Crochet got the better of me - I can't do it but . . . I'll sign up for the Knitting Square if anyone else does it

  8. Count me in either way: I' d happily join squares together or make one and pass it on- and yes: I am volunteering to do the joining together; although there are far more talented crocheters out there! Xx

    1. Foster mummy, that's brilliant but be aware that if you receive all the squares you are going to have to give your address to a lot of people. Are you still willing?

  9. I don't have a blog and whilst I'd be happy to do a square or two the thought about joining all those squares and going round the edge is a bit frightening!

I would love to do that motif in your second square. I tried to do just the joined circles once but think I made them too small and it was a bit awkward. Do you have a pattern or could you post a link please?

    1. Hi, Campfire, I can't do it now but I'll post the details of the square plus others later. It's from a crochet book that was a present from DD one Christmas. Thank you for volunteering.

  10. Count me in, this sounds like an excellent idea, especially as someone benefits from a warm blanket at the end and we can all pat ourselves on the back for a job well done! What about if people made and joined four granny squares into a square and then these were sent to one person to join and complete? It would mean fewer people were posting to the final person who does the joining. Four granny squares really don't take that long to make either. Just a thought. x
