X? marks the spot

I have quite a collection of book marks - home-made and bought yet what do I use to mark my pages?

Anything that comes to hand, where-ever I am when reading the book. I seem to have about five books on the go at the moment, two have packets of pills to mark where I am ...

one has a till receipt, one has a scrap piece of paper and oh yes ... one has a proper book mark in it.

In the past I've used pieces of wool, nail files, crocheted squares, calling cards and pencils or pens. I shall have to try harder and use some of my ready made book markers.

  1. Oh, I thought it was just me. I have loads and loads of bookmarks, bought from various places we've visited, and handmade ones as gifts from friends, and yet I still mostly use till receipts or anything else that comes to hand - and I also usually have 3 or 4 books on the go at any one time. Snap.

  2. One of my friends is a librarian, they find lots of "bookmarks" in returned books, one of the most unusual was a cooked rasher of bacon. Like you I use whatever is to hand.

  3. Never used a pen or pencil before as a bookmark. I usually end up using a tissue or paper towel.

  4. I tend to use handmade bookmarks too and occasionally receipts or business cards. I must admit, however, that sometimes I am one of those annoying people who turn over the corner of the page. Usually only when its a book I own though.

  5. I've only got one book mark. Mick uses a flight ticket, I think he was on a plane when he started the book.

  6. I usually use a kleenex tissue (unused...) as a bookmark. I found that I was leaving nice bookmarks in the books when I returned them to the library so I switched to tissue. Be happy - Jeanne

  7. Hi Mum, I am with you on this one! I love proper bookmarks but I too very rarely use them for their intended purpose!
By the way, that Salley Vickers book is my ultimate, most favourite book I have ever read! It is the only book I can re-read, and be blown away by it again and again! I would love to know what you think about it...

  9. At least you don't turn the corner of the page over Mum! - nothing worse than reading a book with a creased corner xxx

  10. Oh I am the same, and shame I even turn over the corner of the pages, which is terrible.

I have some lovely bookmarks. I just need to start using them.

Your one on the far right reminds me of one I gave my mother from Zambia, with pressed wild flowers on it.

  11. I use a book mark my sister gave to me,but if I have two books on the go I tend to use a (CLEAN!) tissue for book #2.

  12. I do exactly the same thing. Till receipts instead of a gorgeous embroidered bookmark.

  13. Hello Mum
Looks like you and me and all the others were seperated at birth - so similar are we lol
Have ones that magnetically clip over the top of pages, some that slide onto pages and then poke out the top and others that are pieces of fishing line that sit in the spine part and have decorations on each end - however having lost many round the house (they turn up in odd places from time to time) and unknowingly donated a few to the library it's 'anything goes for a bookmark' here in my house. Draw the line at bacon tho!!
    Take care

  15. In Tavistock there is a secondhand book shop and on the wall are some of the 'unusual' bookmarks. They range from old postcards to Lego Trees from the 1960's (they were flat then) to theatre tickets and many other things.

  16. I've only got one book mark, and if that isn't to hand I cant be bothered to find it, and think I will remember the page I am on. I don't of course.
