Reduced to this

Just in the supermarket at the right time for reduced fruit and veg last night and picked up 8 bananas for 15p. Three were soft so I made Banana Cake to go in the freezer.

6 oz margarine or butter
6 oz sugar
2 - 4 mashed bananas
12 oz self raising flour
1 heaped tsp baking powder
3 tblsp milk

Cream marg and sugar together, then add the eggs and mashed banana.
Next add the flour, baking powder and milk and fold into the creamed mixture.
Divide the mixture between 2 loaf tins and bake in the centre of the oven (180 degrees or 160 degrees for a fan oven for about 45 mins..
This recipe is adapted from 'Money Saving Expert'.

I made some oatie biscuits while the oven was on aswell.

The broccoli (30p for 3 large heads) only needed a bit of water to perk it up a little and that will be cooked with ...

... the carrots (8p) and new potatoes (15p) for tea tonight with a pork chop for DH and a fish portion for me.

The cauli will keep in the fridge for another meal later in the week.

I love a good bargain.

  1. They were good bargains. I keep meaning to make Banana Cake but I never get round to it.

  2. Good shopping Mum. I only managed 2 pork chops for 75p today.

  3. Crikey, that was a good haul. I rarely get bargains as I never shop in the evening and that seems to be the best time to go.

  4. Its good when you get bargains like that.
I love Banana Cake so I will try your recipe

  7. Super great bargains!!
The cakes look yummy! I bet they really are. :)

  8. Brilliant bargains, and you've made them stretch so far.

    Sft x

  9. how long would they keep in the freezer for ??

  10. I'm not sure Miss Piggy Bank but we are still eating homemade crumbles from the summer 2010!

  11. Excellent banana bargains! I'm so jealous since bananas here after the weather events are still too dear for baking with.

Think I might give your Oatie biscuits a try later today if I have time.

  12. Well done Mum :) I scour the discount veggie shelf at the shop as well and always find it amazing some the bargains you can pick up. And back in the 80s I remember my grandfather going by the back of the local shop and picking up any fruit/veg they were throwing out. Most of it went towards feeding the chickens and rabbits but quite often some of it went towards tea as well. In these days of Health and Safety I doubt any shops are keen to do this anymore's really sad to think of the waste!
